Since at least early 2024, an ongoing texting scam has been targeting users in the United States and Europe with notices that claim a debt for unpaid tolls.
Recently, according to Krebs On Security, the toll smishing scheme has become more sophisticated, and a recent spate of telephone calls to Turnpikes.com suggests the scheme may now include fake notices sent via the U.S. Postal Service. We are attempting to verify this information.
Below is the published warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Internet Crime Complaint Center, better known as the IC3.
If you believe you have received a false or fake notice, or you have been the victim of a toll smishing scam, please file a complaint with the IC3. Their website is www.ic3.gov.
