Below, you will find a published warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center, issued about a year ago.
This scam has continued since at least March 2024. It is an ongoing texting scam has been targeting users in the United States, Canada and Europe with notices that claim a debt for unpaid tolls. The scheme has also included fake notices sent via email.
Krebs On Security reported early this year that the toll smishing scheme had become more sophisticated, with at least one known cyber-criminal element publishing new templates to target users with more realistic-looking payment demands.
