For about a year, since March 2024, an ongoing texting scam has been targeting users in the United States and Europe with notices that claim a debt for unpaid tolls. The scheme also may include fake notices sent via email.
Recently, Krebs On Security reported the toll smishing scheme had become more sophisticated, with at least one known cyber criminal element publishing a series of new templates to target users. Additionally, continuing emails and telephone calls to Turnpikes.com suggest the scheme continues to propagate.
Below is the published warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Internet Crime Complaint Center, better known as the IC3.
If you believe you have received a false or fake notice, or you have been the victim of a toll smishing scam, please file a complaint with the IC3. Their website is www.ic3.gov.
